Organisational design + shared leadership
Organisation: Magpie Project
The project: With a brief to generate options for organisational structure, reducing the weight of responsibility on the Founder and identifying opportunities for shared decision-making in a passionate, hard-working team, I knew I had to get ‘below the waterline’, as my Deep Democracy training would describe it. Making the invisible, visible, whilst valuing what was already really great about the organisation.
Impact:
- Following initial research using survey tools, we adopted a strengths-based approach in a workshop designed to build safety, trust and equity of voice.
- Using Appreciative Enquiry, we uncovered the underlying assets and conditions that foster success as a team.
- From this shared start point, I was able to generate a series of recommendations for shared leadership responsibilities and collective decision-making.
- The team is already taking forward some of the options put forward, laying a solid foundation from which to build as the team adds much needed capacity.
“Absolutely over the moon to have some space and time to think through how we – as an organisation – want to look to the future, keep mums and minis centred, meet ever-escalating need and grow our team in a way that is comfortable, psychologically-safe and true to our roots. Today’s workshop was wonderful. It was deeper and 100% less scary than expected, I am so excited to be doing this work alongside you. I thought you were so careful and considered, and clever in how you framed things. I know that you heard lots of unsaid things and lots of blanks that we need to look at – I loved the pace, and I was really pleased at what came out” – Jane Williams, Founder/Director
